West Chester大学日本校に通いながら英語を学び、TOEFL試験に向けて勉強を進めていました。そんなある日、夏にWest Chester大学に滞在して勉強ができる期間限定イベントの募集が始まりました。実際にアメリカの大学を見て体験できるということだったので、即参加することにしました。
日本どころか地元からも出たことがない自分が、いきなりアメリカの大学を訪問するとは、かなり非日常的な体験でした。当時はインターネットがなく、大学の情報は本や雑誌から得られるわずかなものだけでした。実際の留学ではなく短期滞在なので、パスポートさえあれば参加可能でした。ほとんどの参加者は勉強目的というよりも、アメリカ観光が主な目的だったと思います。
1990年の夏、成田空港から出発し、アメリカのJFK空港に向かいました。初の海外フライトで、14時間の飛行時間は数日間に感じられるほど長く感じました。West Chesterという土地は、ペンシルバニア州フィラデルフィアの郊外にある地方都市で、国際便での最寄りはニューヨークのJFK空港でした。到着後は、数時間バスで移動してWest Chesterに向かうというスケジュールでしたが、到着時にはかなり疲れきっていました。
アメリカの大学はセメスター制（春学期と秋学期の2期制）の場合は、夏は基本的に6月から9月まで休みです。自分たちが訪問した7月にはキャンパスにはほとんど生徒がおらず、閑散としていました。そのため、約30名の日本人グループが滞在する寮には余裕があるように見えました。ここで約1ヶ月間、英語の授業を受けながら過ごすことになりました。この短期間で、非常に多くの経験を積むことができました。

While attending the Japanese campus of West Chester University, I continued studying English and preparing for the TOEFL exam. One day, I learned about a special summer program that would allow students to stay at the main West Chester University campus in the U.S. for a limited time. Since it was an opportunity to see what an American university was like firsthand, I immediately decided to participate.
For someone like me, who had never even left my hometown, let alone Japan, the idea of suddenly visiting an American college felt incredibly surreal. At the time, there was no internet, so the little information I had about American colleges came from books and magazines. Since this was a short-term stay rather than a full-fledged study abroad program, all that was needed to participate was a passport. I suspect most participants were more interested in sightseeing in America than in studying.
In the summer of 1990, we departed from Narita Airport and headed to JFK Airport in the U.S. It was my first time flying internationally, and the 14-hour flight felt like it lasted for days. West Chester is a small town on the outskirts of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the closest international airport was JFK in New York. After arriving there, we took a bus for several hours to reach West Chester, and by the time we arrived, we were all quite exhausted.
Since American universities typically operate on a semester system (with Spring and Fall semesters), the summer break lasts from June to September. When we visited in July, the campus was almost deserted, with very few students around. As a result, the dormitory where our group of about 30 Japanese students stayed had plenty of available rooms. We spent nearly a month there, taking English classes and experiencing life on an American campus. It was a short period, but I got to experience many valuable events.
